Dr. William E. Blake, Professor Emritus, Department of History

Scholar, Minister, Teacher, Friend…

Dr. William Blake received his doctoral degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond and joined the faculty of the Richmond Professional Institute in 1965, before it had become Virginia Commonwealth University, as a professor of history. He began his career teaching courses in Renaissance, Reformation, Early Middle Ages and High Middle Ages, which he later transformed into a course in the History of Christianity. He has served as acting chairman of the Department of History and served as the first president of both the VCU Faculty Senate and the Virginia Faculty Senate. Professor Blake retired from the faculty in 1992 as an Emeritus Professor of History. Upon his retirement, Professor Blake established the Blake Fund, which later became the endowed fund supporting the Blake Chair in the History of Christianity. In addition to his academic career, Professor Blake has served as pastor of West Side Christian Church (now the United Christian Church, which is affiliated with the Disciples of Christ denomination, between 1964 and 1992. He also served as an interim pastor at several other churches before becoming senior minister at Battery Park Christian Church in 2007.
