Purple can symbolize pain, suffering, and therefore mourning and penitence. It is the liturgical color for the Season of Lent. It is also the color of royalty, so traditionally has also been used for Advent.
Children can go around (yes, ask the pianist to play some reflective music) the congregation during worship with their purple markers (give each child a purple marker with clear instructions & an example of the dot) and place a very small dot in the middle of the palm of each member sitting in the pews, during worship. No better way to connect with children during Lenten season as they understand the meaning of the cross, pain, and suffering in an interactive and simple manner. At the end, we (ministers) place a purple robe on the cross as the children hold hand and stand around that cross and give thanks to God for the sacrifice on the cross.
